Swimmers alternate arm strokes, rotate their bodies, and use a flutter kick, typically kicking three times for each stroke. First seen in the Olympics in 1900, backstroke evolved into its modern form by the 1930s. Races are held over 50, 100, and 200 yards/meters, each requiring a mix of speed and endurance.
