For the first time, NASA data visualizers have created a view of a total solar eclipse that shows what the moon's shadow will really look like. Usually the moon's shadow is just portrayed as an oval. But in this new view, the mountains and valleys on the moon and features on the Earth help to create the jagged edges seen here. This more complicated, more correct, polygon shape of the moon's shadow was created by using data from NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter. Goddard visualizer Ernie Wright
