Different dye pigments can bind to your yarn or fiber at different rates. A lot of this knowledge is anecdotal from observations while dyeing fibers. This can be the reason why a technique you dyed with some colors doesn't translate well when you switch out the colors. There are colorways I've dyed that I have realized years later worked differently because emerald green is a spreader. Increasing heat and acid can speed up the rates colors will bind to the yarn.
