A large explosion at an oil refinery near the Texas coast on Monday shot plumes of smoke into the air and forced nearby residents to shelter in place, officials said.

Local authorities in Texas issued an immediate shelter-in-place order on Monday following an explosion at Valero’s Port Arthur refinery, as emergency crews responded to an active fire at the facility.

By 9:00 p.m. local time (7:30 a.m. IST, Tuesday), emergency crews and refinery fire teams had managed to contain the bulk of the blaze, though cooling operations remained active throughout the night.
