With the same level of ease as ordering an Uber or Lyft, Oregonians may soon be able to ride in self-driving cars or get their groceries delivered by a fully autonomous vehicle if a bill in the Legislature advances.

Sen. Cynthia Lummis, R-Wy., said she is "super excited" about autonomous vehicles and the protections they could afford drivers in her home state, where long drives are part of everyday life.

The crash occurred within two blocks of an elementary school in Santa Monica, California during normal student drop-off hours, according to NHTSA.

The self-driving car company, an arm of Google’s parent company, is rapidly expanding its service beyond a handful of cities.

Officials said the child ran across the street from behind a double-parked SUV toward the school and was hit by the Waymo AV. The child sustained minor injuries and is expected to be OK. According to Waymo, the child stood up immediately after the accident and walked to the sidewalk.

Riding in a driverless taxi such as a WAYMO requires one to suspend his or her disbelief that the thing won’t crash. Actually our ride was quite pleasant, thank you.
