On CNN’s "State of the Union" Jan. 11, U.S. Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., told anchor Jake Tapper the Trump administration had shortened ICE agents’ training time while scaling up its hiring.
"They are not getting the traditional five months training... The training for the ICE agents now is 47 days. Why 47 days? Because Donald Trump is the 47th president," said U.S. Sen. Mark Warner.
As anti-ICE protests erupt, the new requirement shows how rapidly the mission is changing at an agency traditionally focused on terrorism, drug smuggling and border security.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement hired over 12,000 officers and reduced training time to aid with deportation efforts. Steve Inskeep speaks with a homeland security expert about that training.
